The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) are deepening their collaboration to advance human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.
During a courtesy visit to NIALS, NHRC Executive Secretary Dr. Tony Ojukwu emphasized the importance of joint efforts in capacity building, knowledge dissemination, and institutional strengthening.
Dr. Ojukwu highlighted key areas of potential collaboration, including joint training programs, curriculum development, strengthening accountability mechanisms, and annual human rights dialogue.
The Learned Silk stressed the need for enhanced training in international humanitarian and human rights law, particularly for military and security personnel, as well as capacity building for civil society organizations (CSOs) and government agencies.

NIALS Director General Dr. Abdulqadir Abikan acknowledged the existing cordial relationship between the two institutions and appreciated the NHRC's commitment to collaboration.
He encouraged government agencies to prioritize research in their budgets, noting that the depth of research conducted by an institution reflects its value.
Dr. Abdulqadir proposed constituting a committee to conduct in-depth research on the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria, leveraging the strengths of both institutions.
He said the partnership is crucial for both institutions to deliver on their mandates. While the law enforcement officers, civil servants, and community actors operate with a clear understanding of their obligations under domestic and international humanitarian and human rights law.
