The Chairperson National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Salamatu Sulieman has commended the staff of the Commission for working hard to protect the rights of citizens and foreigners living in the Nigeria.

The Chairperson stated this during an award ceremony for retired staff and those who are working excellently hard towards the promotion, protection and enforcement of human rights in the Country.

According to the erudite lawyer, the idea behind the recognition and awards is to encourage more staff to be extraordinarily dedicated in their duties and to thank those who have retired from service, after meritoriously serving their father land.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN) said that the Commission would continue to reward excellence among staff members who have contributed a lot in raising the bar of human rights in their various schedule of duties.

The Chief Human Rights Officer in Nigeria used the opportunity to commend the new Governing Council for having the welfare of the staff at heart, saying that within the brief period they came on board there has been an improvement in the allowances of the staff.

Prior to the announcement of the beneficiaries of the awards, Director of Human Rights Institute of the Commission, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwakama, mni, who chaired the selection committee spoke on the criteria for choosing the deserving staff.

She said that the committee painstakingly liaised with the Supervisors/Heads of the various departments and units before coming up with the list of the awardees.

The staff awards are in two categories; junior and senior staff. In the junior staff category, Juliana Alfa of the department of Finance and Accounts in the Headquarters, bagged the prestigious award.

In the Senior staff category, Garba Taye Mustapha from Kwara state office and Anyodeji Taiwo Esther from Osun state office won the awards.

However, the duo were not present when the awards were being given by the Commission, so Mr. Hyginus Njoku of Council Secretariat unit was called upon to receive the awards on behalf of Mustapha and Esther.

Similarly, three retired staff of the Commission were also given some handsome gifts for their excellent works while in the civil service.

The retirees are former Director SERVICOM, Hajia Husseina Aliyu, former Executive Secretary Network of National Human Rights Institution in West Africa (NNHRI-WA), Mr Saka Azimazi and a former driver and foreman, Ogbaje Daniel.
