As Nigeria joins the rest of the international community to celebrate the 2021 World Refugees Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is calling on the governments at all levels and other duty bearers to give more attention to Refugees, IDPs, Returnees, Migrants and other persons in vulnerable situations to pave the way for inclusiveness and nondiscrimination.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will be launching a national programme of action for the protection of the rights of Key Populations (KPs) in Nigeria, considering several allegations of human rights violations against this vulnerable members of the society.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu Esq. who made this disclosure in Abuja at a strategic capacity building and planning workshop on the protection of the rights of key populations in Nigeria observed that the enactment of the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act (SSMPA) has unfortunately increased the level of homophobia and attacks on LGBTQ.

As the National Human Rights Commission joins all Nigerians to mark the 2021 National Day of Mourning and Remembrance of Victims of Mass Atrocities (NDMRVMA), the Commission is calling on the the Nigerian Police Force and other law enforcement agencies to rejig their strategies and fish out all criminals and enemies of the state who are continually fueling insecurity, ethnic and religious violence, killings, kidnappings, sexual and gender based violence etc. so as to restore citizens confidence in the ability of the government to protect them.
